As someone that actually rather liked Far Cry 5, I'm curious about what will be coming next.
Will they announce further content for FC5, or will it be a new game?

Some of the info available for the Game Awards pointed to announcements of both new games, and updates. Could this be one of the examples of the later?

Uh-huh. Looks like another spin-off, possibly even a post-apocalyptic Far Cry.

Fallout mixed with Far Cry.

Doing this sort of spoils 5, but my guess is this will be a sequel to 5 using the same area. It could actually include some of the same characters.
