What is Mastodon?

Mastodon is a decentralized social network, but don't worry, unlike a traditional website, Mastodon websites can interoperate, letting their users communicate with each other; just like you can send an email from your Gmail account to someone from Outlook, Fastmail, Protonmail, or any other email provider, as long as you know their email address, you can mention or message anyone on any website using their address.

Why should I join Mastodon?

As Twitter is imploding right now it may be a good idea to migrate to a new Social Media website. As the servers are run by their own community there isn't a risk of Mastodon being own by a huge corporation that seeks only how to maximize profit.

Ok I want to create an account, but is looks complicated!

The first thing you need to do is choosing a server to create your account. Mine was created on Mastodon 🐘 but there is a server for Meta users ;). lashman know the details so he can help.

To search for users you need to know their @ and their server. So it goes like this: @username@server

Help! I have some specific doubt!

Hi, is it possible to use servers as communities? Can I link and unify accounts from two different servers in any way?
 
Following hashtags of things you're interested on Mastodon helps a lot in discovering new folks to follow and interact with.

Out of curiosity, why not host the instance in the same server where these forums live? Could have a custom url that way too.

I suppose setting up and actually managing the instance could be a pain in the ass, especially if anything goes wrong.

masto.host take care about all the technical stuff
 
Registered and accepted so let's see what this is all about. To be honest the Twitter implosion has barely impacted me as i never logged in i just read links from discords and forums so i avoided the really abhorrent stuff but i have noticed a rise in bots, agitators, shotposters and just people with shitty views expressing themselves in comment threads where you wouldn't expect them. So well done Elon i suppose.

Here's my profile, I might be more active than i am on twitter ... but don't count on it.

My brother is a professor and while I was visiting him last week he was discussing how he is planning to have both a Mastodon and Twitter for a while and see what happens.

There’s definitely appetite for change, and if the big names in media, entertainment, science, politics and so on move, the crowds will follow.

Even the BBC has done an article about Mastodon so it’s definitely getting traction.

Fuck Musk.

Also I can't use one account to follow different masto places? I am really lost here. Wanted to follow Dr Alexandre Santerne..

you can, no problem :) just open their profile and click the follow button

You can search for the user in the search bar like this @user@server and then click in the follow icon.
 
That is what I did and when I go to log in, it says my email or password is invalid. Yet I log in fine to the meta at masto one.

when you use the search bar on meta.masto.host it should show you the profile and open it in the sidebar - you should be able to follow it from there

It works when I go to the above link but anywhere else it doesn't. I searched Dr. Alexandre Santerne and he doesn't show up at all. So I need to make another account with same email or something to follow that person?

that's because THAT is your instance - you can only log in there, that's your home server

but then you can search for people once you log in

do you know his handle (username)?

looks like it's @alexsanterne@astrodon.social

So I deactivated my account on .social since... I wasn't so sure about all of this.
But I kinda have to move there, or at least see whats up. I guess my name/account is now taken, even if deactivated?
.social is also not accepting any more users and I am a bit lost where to regsiter, I can't find a fitting (first) server.

try the MC one ;) ultimately it doesn't really matter all that much which server you're in
