|OT| Apple Corner | I like MacBooks and I cannot lie.

Man, I JUST came to bitch about Liquid Ass.

This release has to be the worst one in terms of bugs. Just on the last three days:

  • Fitness+ refusing to detect my AW.
  • iPhone deactivated my alarm for no reason.
  • Complications on my AW disappearing.
  • TouchID on my Mac refusing to consistently work.
I wish Asahi Linux worked on M4. I’d be on it so fast.

Apple does world class hardware and world ass software right now.

I just wanna point out, to whoever is too lazy to click on the posting to follow to the actual article (I hate that mastodon embeds make you got to mastodon first instead of the article).... this isnt about Apple iTunes at all...its just some unrelated music app called "Parachord" that aims to unify various streaming services. good luck with that ;).

I think I'm pretty set on ditching Apple, except for my M4 iPad Pro, which is a legit great tablet and quite unmatched. iPadOS 26 feels like the only Apple OS they haven't fucked. And I love snapping it into my keyboard cover and having a mini laptop for out and about.

Once I've cleared my current credit card (couple of months), I'll gradually replace my Apple devices and with more open ones, hardening them for privacy.

I'm thinking:

First, replace my iPhone 17 Pro Max (which I deeply regret buying - I really dislike this phone because of iOS 26) and iPad mini 7 (an otherwise decent tablet) with a folding phone. I'd be 100% on board with a Pixel (replacing the stock OS with GrapheneOS), but I'm concerned my bank will require me to have Google Play installed regardless. So I'm gonna go with a safer bet, and get a Samsung Fold 7/8 and just debloat it of Google shit (except Play Store) on Samsung's OS.

I'll also have to sell both my Apple Watches (Series 7 and 10), and I'm thinking I'll replace them with a Garmin Forerunner 570 for when I'm out on a run, and one of the new Pebble watches for my day-to-day.

Next, replace my MacBook Pro M4 Pro, which I hate because of iOS 26, with a Lenovo Yoga 14" with AMD CPU, shipped with no OS, then stick Linux on it. I'm thinking Aurora (from Universal Blue, creators of Bazzite) because it's going to be low maintenance and all I want to do on this thing is write, email, browse and dock it to my USB4/Thunderbolt hub for the same functions on a dual screen desk setup. I could get cheaper, but I like having a lot of browser tabs open and I really enjoy a snappy OS. This should be adequate for my needs.

And if I need something with more umpfh, I've got a high-end Lenovo gaming laptop that I can use. It currently has Windows on it, but I'm hoping the Nvidia driver situation improves soon so I can stick Bazzite on it.

That just leaves me with my iPad Pro M4 which, as I said above, I'm going to keep about. It works well as a tablet and mini laptop, and I'm going to subscribe to Filen to sync across all the different OS's I'll be using.

Great plan!

I still have my S24 Ultra in here, my only problem with it is that it has a custom ROM installation from my carrier and it keeps installing stupid shit like games without my consent. Otherwise, it works fine I think. Since I have an eSIM, I'd have to go to my carrier for a switch, but that should take like 5 minutes.

So, I'd be selling my 16 Pro Max and my Watch S11. I'm already covered with a Forerunner 960 for my fitness tracking needs. I already sold my iPad, and I'd sell my Macbook but that would leave me without a computer, so I'll hold to it for at least this year.

I will keep my Apple TV though.

If you hate MacOS 26, you could also go back to MacOS Sequoia (the previous version), if you wanna keep your Mac — it's still supported.

This feels like a short-term solution. At some point, Apple will stop supporting this version, sooner rather than later so they can force you to move to macOS 26.

At this point, I think a complete detachment is needed.

i will stick to Apple for phone, because the app support and official stuff like banking, as mentioned one probably has to have either apple or google and google is just huge nope for me. For the future would love to see the linux project go well for M processors. I still have my M4 mini that I use as a server.

They're probably gonna support it for another year or two, and who knows, maybe the next MacOS version has less liquid glass again?

Anyway, it's just a suggestion :)

Sounds really stupid but I haven't switch to the Garmin I have right here because I'd lose my move streak with the AW lmfao

Considering we live in a world where everything getting price hikes its nice to see a computer for lower price! Not sure how usable it is for heavy production use but for daily stuff it seems perfect. Its using their phone processor, 8gb ram and 13 inch.

Apple-MacBook-Neo-color-lineup-260304_big.jpg.large.jpg

also, 600$ / 700€ entry point price. my guess is that processor will be fine for most people not doing anything heavy. the 8 gigs of RAM though would worry me personally. (but I'm not the target audience for these machine... and I already have a Macbook. Im typing on one right now! ;) )

here's more — MacBook Neo

Yeah, I think I've mapped out my Apple exodus.

I'll be keeping my iPad Pro M4 because it's an unmatched tablet and still serves my needs. It'll be my only toe dipped into the Apple ecosystem.

Other than that, I'm thinking:
  • M4 Pro MacBook Pro switched for Dell XPS 14" (2026). I've considered a Framework laptop, but I decided for my laptop I wanted the slick chassis. It's about the only indulgent thing I'm switching to.
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max (possibly the worst phone I've ever bought - I hate this thing) switched for the far simpler Fairphone Gen 6.
  • iPad mini A17 Pro switched for the Boox Go Color 7 (I only use it for reading anyway).
  • Apple Watch Series 7 and 10 switched for a Pebble Time 2 (for day-to-day) and Garmin Forerunner 165 (for running).
I'm losing some functionality, but I'm getting more simple and sustainable devices on the most part. I realised I don't use anything on my iPhone that requires a lot of power. I browse and chat. I don't even take many photos - why do I have a Pro Max phone?

It'll be nice to ditch liquid glass on everything most of all. I'm amazed such a horrible UI was released by Apple, but I'm also just as amazed that it had such an adverse affect on my opinion of them.

Where I stand is either have Apple or something worse. Even with Android opening up, its still Google servers in the background tracking.

But it easy for me to say, I actually really like using both iphones and macs and didnt have any issues with glass.

For me the only thing that makes me want to go to open systems is the freedom over my data.

And of course Apple being cozy with fascists is a huge one too.

Apple devices track you too. The difference is you have to trust Apple. I’d be very surprised if they weren’t building up a model used to sell you shit once they unleash ads all over iOS, which is on the horizon.

I mean sure its about trust, so when they say that everything is encrypted on device I have to take their word for it. And Im sure I will change my stance if the day comes when they do as you say, but the difference is that google already does all that shit so the choice is easy.

I mean, Google sucks, no doubt. I have a Google account but it basically has Play Store information on it and that's it. My Gmail and YouTube accounts are gone, I use Kagi for search and I adblock through the wazoo.

Google won't get much to track me on and even if they do I'm not gonna see any of their ads so I'm a pretty low value mark for them.

I don't really get a choice on Apple. If I want content blockers I have to use Safari, and Apple only put those content blockers and privacy protections in to stop anyone else tracking or advertising on their own platform, because Apple sees all that telemetry and data as theirs to sell, not a free for all for any other Big Tech company to plunder. They already advertise on the App Store, Maps is next, and their $600 MacBook Neo is a user acquisition gambit to get people into their ecosystem for subscriptions and ads, where the "growth" is. I wouldn't be surprised if they were taking a small loss on those systems in order to sell users on the App Store cut and subscriptions and all that.

I expect now Apple has released a $600 laptop, they will go into turbo enshittification mode.

In short, there's no good choice. So I'm at least choosing the devices designed/manufactured and services run out of the USA where possible.
