The Wedding Present has release a new EP called "Maxi" – inspired by their 1996 EP "Mini", these are all car-themed songs. Its got a somewhat heavier sound than is usual for them, which is nice :)

Spotify has also released their Wrapped thingy for 2025, and the new thing this year is your "musical age", which is informed by how much old stuff you listen to, I guess. Threw out 58 for me.
Top artists were Unbelievable Truth, Motorpsycho, Manic Street Preachers, Die Ärzte, Garish.
Top songs were "Spike Island" (Pulp), "Sisyphus" (Garbage), "Love to Give" (Garbage), "Citizens Band" (Unbelievable Truth), "Brushstrokes of Reunion" (Manic Street Preachers).
Top albums were "Let all that we Imagine be the Light" (Garbage), "Critical Thinking" (Manic Street Preachers), "The Painful Truth" (Skunk Anansie), "Am Ende wird alles ein Garten" (Garish), and "Rich Inner Life" (Unbelievable Truth).
Top genre was Metal. None of the top artists, albums or songs were metal, though ;)

IDLES has been on heavy rotation for me this week, 'specially Brutalism and TANGK. I don't think I dislike any of their albums which is rare for me.

I came across this band – Dea Matrona – recently via Rockpalast's Youtube channel (they regularly upload concerts and individual songs are re-uploads). They're an Irish bluesrock band duo who share singing and regularly swap between bass and lead guitar. Its all very nice to listen to :)

If anyone feels like a bit of doom metal, I can recommend "Ultra Soul" by Lord Elephant.

(Spotify)

and if you feel like shoegaze — or, as they call it, "riotgaze" —, "When a Flower doesn't grow" by Softcult is a good album to give a spin.

Just stumbled across this band – Calva Louise — thanks to Rockpalast. They're three people from Venezuela, New Zealand and France (and based in England) and mix metal, electronica and, for lack of a better term, pop. The singer switches between very pleasant melodic singing and shouting.

Here's a live performance of their song "Aimless" from the 2025 album "Edge of the Abyss" (linked below)

New song by Belphegor (Austrian black/death metal):

and a new song by Arch Enemy (Swedish melodic death metal):

they have a new singer — Lauren Hart from Once Human — and she did a great job. I personally like a mix of clean vocals with some growls, but she mostly growls in this song, with some clean vocals in the last chorus (instantly making me wish there was more :) )
but its lovely anyways; as is the Belphegor song.

Rockpalast is such a great source of good music. Just saw this clip from the Belgian rock trio Brutus:

unusual setup where their drummer also sings. Really nice voice too, and cool energy/vibe overall.

Here's a live album of theirs as well:

There's a new album by Motorpsycho (psychedelic/progressive/alternative rock from Norway)

Surprisingly short album this year (36 minutes). Not a bad thing, mind you, just unusual for them. And I say "this year" because they release something every year.....and thats after 35 years of existing as band, and still going strong.
Anyway, its good! I've been listening to that several times already. They said on their website its their take on 70s classic hard rock before it became formulaic.

And to stay in the faux-70s; another Rockpalast find: Rosalie Cunningham, English 70s-tinged rock musician. cool sound, cool songs, lovely voice.

I've recently thought about this band — scarabaeusdream — again, and this standout track, "But me", which is perfectly suited to blast loudly. A tour-de-force of piano, drums, guitars and singing/screaming. Lovely stuff.
